According to the Associated Press, the man was then killed in a shootout.
Monday’s serious incident occurred along with emerging threats to US and state judges after the incident of flight terrorism and struggle of court system nationwide to enhance security. Back to 2003 and 2008, federal judges and other court employees have been in great threats with figure increasing from 592 to 1278 respectively.
At news conference, US Sen. John Ensign (R) of Nevada said that he did this by himself. Timothy Fautsko, a security expert with the National Center for State Courts thought that the situation was getting worse and more unsafe.
According to statement of Glenn Fine, Inspector General, federal court officials have been increasingly under threats for several recent years and the department lacked of critics in their response program.
The problem of court security has been clearly emerging through some recent attacks. For example, a man who got involved in a rape conviction shot and murdered a judge court reporter, and court deputy. Federal officials spent $12 million fostering greater security for judges and installing alarm systems in their homes.
According to AP reports, the purpose of building first federal Las Vegas courthouse was to meet resistance requirements which were passed after the 1995 bombing incident of Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City. Mr. Fautsko said that courts were increasingly aware of the need of greater security and many essential changes to cope with the threats have been made.
